Williams College Rapist Yoonsang Bae '17 Sentenced to Three Years in Prison

PITTSFIELD, MA — We finally have a report that the sentencing of Williams College rapist Yoonsang Bae '17 took place on Monday, September 16, 2019. The Berkshire Eagle indicates that minutes after apologizing for the pain he'd caused his victim and those around him, Bae was sentenced to three years in prison for raping a classmate in 2014.

While a student at Williams College, Bae fit the stereotype of a model minority. Born in South Korea, he was both smart and athletic. For example, he was a member of the Williams College Rugby team. He was 5' 9 and weighed 160 and played the positions of fullback, scrumhalf, and winger. Bae was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in 2017.

Yoonsang Bae, 27, was convicted of one count of rape following a two-day, jury-waived trial before Judge Michael Callan, who found Bae guilty on September 6, 2019. Assistant Berkshire District Attorney Stephanie Ilberg asked Callan to consider a prison sentence of five to seven years. Ilberg noted Bae has no prior criminal record but said he was someone the victim had trusted and considered something of a mentor or "big brother." Bae's attorney, Charles Dolan, said that before trial, prosecutors offered a sentence of three to four years in prison if Bae were to plead guilty.

Several supporters of Bae's including friends and his mother attended Monday's hearing. Callan said he had read and considered several letters of support written on Bae's behalf. The judge's sentence of three years included a recommendation that it be served at the Berkshire Jail and House of Correction. This facility is about a 25 mile drive south of Williams College.
